The era of Smokey and the Bandit movies

Written by man on Monday, November 30th, 2009 in Other.

Those of us lucky enough to be around in the 70s when this fantastic car came out drool everytime we regard it.  Imagine getting a vehicle from the factory with a 455 cubic inch engine in it!This vehicle kicked butt!  Then if you did some work, like we did to ours, as in having the engine blue printed, balanced and a lot more, it probably did even better.  Let’s just say it was doing miles better then one hp per cubic inch!

This was the era of Smokey and the Bandit movies.  Good ole boy Burt Reynolds drove a black Trans Am in the flick and everyone and his uncle all of a sudden wanted one.  Naturally, by that time the ones they were selling were watered down versions with no where near the power of the first ones.

Since we are not sure of the statute of limitations, let’s just say that any stories are presumed to start’Once upon A Time’.

One of our favorite stories is when we were getting onto sunrise road late one evening and a Camaro rolled up next to us and started revving his engine, well you can imagine the rest. Here was a poor soul who had not a clue of what was in store.  Since we do not believe in street racing, it definitely was a good thing we were both going onto the entrance ramp.  After we were satisfied that no one was on the parkway at that time of night, we let the Beast Out To Play.  We never did see any more then his fading headlights.

One of the funniest moments was when we lived in upstate NY and my man went to the store to choose something up and this fellow in a Mustang 2 pulled up next to him and my hubby had fun ( hey, we are all titled often ).  As Chuck tells it : You see at that time a local car dealer was running a TV spot featuring a Mustang two just destroying a Trans Am.  So this gentleman pulls up next to me, gunning his engine for all he is’s worth.  The light changes, he chirps his tires and flashes me an enormous smile as he takes off.  Well, I idle away from the light, give it enough gas in first to drag even with him, then drop the hammer, lighting up both tires, throw 2nd, light them up again and then ease off.  Drive down the road to the store.

When I come out of the store this bloke has finally got there and is waiting for me and says,’but the commercial claims Mustangs will beat the pants off the Trans Am.’ I terribly blithely replied,’Not this Trans Am!’

They don’t make them like this anymore.  It’s sad when you concentrate on it!  Those of us who lived and got raised in the age of the muscle automobiles, street rods, saturday night cruise nights were very, very lucky.  I feel sorry for the youth of today that they missed out on all of this.

So what happened to that great 455 Trans Am, sadly the harsh upstate NY winters aren’t kind to automobiles and rust took the Trans Am from us.  However, we did replace it - with a customized 1973 Vette, which we drove cross country to California, but that is a full nother story!

Fast and powerful cars

Written by man on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Other.

The Porsche Boxster and Boxster S are fast, strong cars and most of all the best-handling production roadsters on the planet.  Introduced in 1996, it stayed basically unchanged, apart from moderate hp and interior-options tweaks.  That is what Porsche usually does with the successful models : it keeps automobile look and configuration for ages.

A stronger second-generation Boxster was introduced in 2005 and it keeps Porsche’s conservative evolutionary path.  Like its precedent, it’s a mid-engine, six-cylinder two-seater that looks like Porsche Spyder.  Still, over half Boxsters structure and electronics are borrowed from the 911 Carrera.

The 2005 Boxster looks sprightlier than its 2004 equivalent, thanks to the revision of the torque and the 15 added hp and the additional powercoming on strongly between 2000rpm and 4000 rpm.  The 2005 Boxster S almost equals the acceleration and top-speed performance of Porsche’s expensive 911 Carrera.  The Boxster exhaust has beentuned to play a particular tromboning wail like no other automobile.  This is a superb thing thinking that both engines are smaller versions of the six-cylinder in the Carrera.

The transmission for base Boxters is 5-speed manual but the optional variant offers a six-speed.  Both models can also be fitted with a 5 speed Tiptronic, the glorious Porsche-designed automatic transmissionthat began the trend toward manually shifted automatics.

The bodywork and the inside of the Boxster are of high quality, but considering that there’s noting tricky or only ornamental, we will be able to definitely say that these aren’t opulent vehicles.  Still, the inside has been improved since the old auto was often criticised for being to cheap-looking.  The center console has been upgraded with revised switch-gear and titanium look paneling.  The seats are way more supportive and body-shaped in the latest version, making them look absolutely superb.  Unlike the other roadsters, the Boxster has no problem swallowing bags for a long trip : it has 2 trunks, a tiny one in the rear and an abundantly deep one under the front hood.

One of The Boxsters best qualities is the powered convertible top, awfully fast to retract or re-erect.  In the new Boxster, the top can be operated at a velocity up to 30 mph.  The triple-layer padded cloth tops ( with a heated-glass rear window ) is as weather-tight and quiet as most metal roofs.

The Boxster is called a mid engine-car.  The explanation is the sweet six-cylinder engine is mounted behind the seats, just fore of the rear spindle.  So if you wandto see what’s under the hood once in while, well you cannot do that with The Boxster.  The only way to see the engine is from beneath or by scrupulously removing body panels, which mechanics must do to service the engine.  But, the good news is that having the engine mounted nearer to the middle of the car makes for better weight distribution.  And that’s what makes the car handle so well.

Who is Ferdinand Porsche

Written by man on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Other.

Ferdinand Porsche was around 72 years of age when the first hand-made, hand-beaten Porsche 356 rolled down the line at Gmund.  It was 1948 but Porsche had started his career before the turn of the century.

Just what was he doing for his first fifty years?

The one word answer is’plenty’.  A slightly longer answer is coming up with some of the top motoring icons and fastest cars of the twentieth century.  Or, getting all of the experience, information and abilities wanted to produce one of the most up to date and most suave lines of sports cars in the world.

It all started in the late nineteenth century.  Porsche’s dad was a tinsmith, but young Ferdinand had a preference for new-fangled electricity.  He worked for an electric gear manufacturer before planning electric automobiles for Lohner.  The Lohner-Porsche, with electrical motors in the front wheel hubs, ( one of the first front-wheel drives ), was exhibited at the Paris exhibition in 1900 and won a Grand Prize for twenty-five years old Porsche.

Porsche kept developing the Lohner.  Motors in all four centers made it one of the earliest four-wheel drives and a gas engine and generator rather than batteries made it one of the first mixed drive autos.  Porsche himself raced one of the petrol-electric cars.

In 1905, Porsche moved from Lohner to Austro-Daimler where he became technical Director, and later managing Director.  His first petrol car there was developed into the sports model that claimed the 1910 Prince Henry Trial.

Cars weren’t the sole mechanical designs of the self-taught car genius.  In 1912 he drew up a four-cylinder aero engine.  Its layout was a flattened X, almost a flat four.

World War I had Porsche working for the army, coming up with gun tractors, motorized artillery pieces and a giant road train carrying an 81-ton gun and pulling four trailers each with eight-wheel drive.  Total weight was 150 tons!  It used the Lohner-Porsche methodology of electrical motors in the centers with a 20 liter, 150 hp traction engine providing the power.

In 1917 he was given an honorary doctorate from Vienna Technical University.

Porsche turned to small cars after WWI, coming up with the Sascha, which could hit 89 miles per hour with a miniscule 1100 cc engine.  These autos came 1st and second in their class in the 1921 Targa Florio.  However, differences of opinion with other directors of Austro-Daimler led on to a move to Daimler in Stuttgart, as Technical Director with a seat on the board.

Here Porsche fixed the poor performance of Daimler’s new two-liter supercharged race car, which went on to take the first three places in its class in the 1924 Targa Florio, including 1st place overall.  Porsche was awarded another honorary doctorate, this time from Stuttgart college for his achievements.

At Daimler he designed one of the most renowned cars in history, the seven-liter six-cylinder supercharged Mercedes which progressed thru the K and S series to the SS, SSK and SSKL.  These cars controlled racing in 1928-30.  As well, he worked on diesel engines for lorries and airplane engines.

Daimler merged with Benz in 1926, and the mixed board denied Porsche’s push for small and light Daimler-Benz cars.  Porsche give up and moved to Steyr where he designed a huge expensive car with a 5.3-liter straight-eight.

Steyr fell down in the great depression though, and in 1930 Porsche was unemployed.

At the age of 55, when many folks these days are taking early retirement, Porsche opened his very own design bureau with an elite group of engineers he had formerly worked with, including his very own son Ferdinand’Ferry’ Porsche.

His first job was the Wander W.17, a small medium-priced six-cylinder car.  A little auto for Zundapp followed.  Named the Volksauto, it was an early ancestor of the Beetle, with a rear-mounted radial engine and fully independent suspension.  It didn’t go into production due to an upswing in Zundapp’s standard market of motorcycles.

In 1932 Russia offered Porsche the job of State Designer.  It was an attractive offer, but he turned it down.

Another tilt at a small car came from NSU.  The Zundapp was dusted of to give the basic concepts, but this time a flat-four air-cooled engine was used at the rear, along with torsion bar suspension and swing axles at the rear.  Three prototypes were built before the project was deserted, but the VW Beetle was getting closer.

Hot racing automobiles were still on the drawing board, with the Porsche team building a genuine monster for Auto-Union.  It had a 4.4 litre supercharged V16 mounted at the back.  With the weight at the rear, swing axles, skinny tires and incredible power, ( it’s reported they could spin the wheels at one hundred mph ) these autos were a handful to drive, but they won races!

Meanwhile, Hitler was also gaining amazing power, and one of his concepts was for a’people’s car’.  Porsche got the job of coming up with it, and all his previous experience went into the best selling car ever, the Volkswagen Beetle.  Three Beetles were turned into lightweight sports coupes for the suggested 1939 Berlin-Rome road race.

The race never occurred as the Second World War started.

During WWII the Beetle was turned into the Kubelwagen, the German equivalent of the Jeep.  Porsche designed the Tiger, Ferdinand and Maus Tanks, which all exploited the mixed drive with an internal combustion engine driving hub-mounted electrical motors.

The war ended and the French threw Professor Porsche, son Ferry, and son-in-law Anton Piech in prison as war criminals.  ( Totally baseless ).  Ferry was released after a few months but the Professor was kept with France demanding 1 million Francs for his release.

Ferry and the design bureau took on new projects to pay the money.  When the Professor was released, the design of the very first Porsche branded sports auto was way under way.  This vehicle was the 356, the start of a line of stimulating thoroughbreds which are some of the most desirable sports automobiles in the world today.

Ferdinand Porsche may have been a humble start in life but he was an automotive genius and for half a century he designed some of the most magnificent machinery ever.  The Porsche autos of today continue his legacy.

Porsche and its staitjacket

Written by man on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Other.

Ferdinand Porsche played a crucial role in the development of planes and racing cars, and the development of tanks for the Wehrmacht.  He’s a car engineer with more than 1000 patents to his name.  He was chosen chief engineer at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart in the 1920s.  Later on , he set up his own engineering workshop and designed among others the Volkswagen.  At the plant where Volkswagen was made, Wolfsburg, he was chief of operations and at the end of the war he was interned by the Allies.

He was released a few years on and began building his first vehicle with his son, Ferry Porsche.  The car was named the Porsche 356 and it appeared to be a sports automobile and a harking back to the Volkswagen.  It had the same 4 cylinder boxer engine that was rear-mounted, just like the VW.  It was a long way from being a powerful sports vehicle, developing only 40 bhp and a maximum speed of 87 mph ( 140 km/h ).  First produced as a convertible and later as a hard top it seperated by the elegant and innovative body.  It was developed in theworkshop of Erwin Komenda, a master of restrained streamlining who had been in command of sheet metal and design methodologies at Porsche since the VW Beetle.  The new style of closed coupe was designed by Komenda and it shortly became the embodiment of the sports vehicle, thanks to its fastback.

This practice was continued by Komenda and Ferdinand’Butzi’ Porsche, the founder’s grandchild, with the 911.

The 911 became simply recognizable : it had engaging sloping bonnet and what later was characteristic’frog eye’ headlights, curves running from the top edge of the windscreen to the rear bumper and a straight waistline.  From a functional and technical viewpoint it was more like BMW 1500, although it kept the stylistic features of the original Porsche.  The new 911 will become the foundation stone of Porsche’s identity, even though the design was not always appreciated.  In the 1970s and 1980s, the designers tries to distance Porsche from its mythical design brought the company to the edge of disaster.  The more modern 924 model,’a folk’s Porsche’, developed with Volkswagen, as well as the 928 were a long way from satisfying the expectations.

In the 1990s, the company noticed that what for over 20 years was understood as a straitjacket, it was actually a marketadvantage.  During the 1990s, Porsche became highly rewarding since they now knew the typical Porsche features were timeless.  Nearly 40 folk now worked in the design department on further developments of the long-running 911.  These developments included the 911 GTI, a strong combinationof sports and racing vehicle, put forward by the in-house designer Anthony R.  Hatter.  In 1999, chief designer proudly presented the new Boxster which enabled Porshe to build a second independent range of models.

New addition of the 911 turbo

Written by man on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Other.

In 2006, Dr.  Ing.  H.c.  Porsche will extend it’s current product line with the addition of a new 911 Turbo, the 6th generation of the 911 series.  This top-of-the-range model will have its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on Feb twenty-eight, 2006 and as from June 24, 2006 it will be available in German dealerships.

The 911 Turbo ( type 997 ) has a few improvements.  It has an output of 480 bhp at 6,000 revs per minute, a 3.6 litre engine, a rated torque of 620 Nm and a maximum torque available between 1,950 and 5,000 rpm.  All these numbers are interpreted into driving performance, as the 911 Turbo with six-speed manual transmission only desires 3.9 seconds to get from nil to a hundred km/h.  The coupe reaches 200 km/h in 12.8 seconds.  Notwithstanding these performance statistics, Porsche developers succeeded to keep the averageconsumption to 12.8 liters per100 km.

For those that need even more speed, the 911 Turbo offers the optionally Tiptronic S automated transmission.  This way, it can reach 100 km/h from a standing start in just 3.7 seconds and two hundred km/h in a trifling 12.2 seconds.  Both manual and automated transmissions have a top speed of 310 km/k.  Available for the 1st time, the optional’Sport Chrono Package Turbo’ enhances the car’s flexibility further.

The Porsche 911 Turbo features a re-designed all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch.  The result will be the transfer of the available power to the road.  That is due to the fact that, dependingon the driving conditions, this system will establish the best torque distribution to guarantee the best-possible drive.  Also, Porsche Traction Management ( PTM ) ensures variable power distribution to the two driven axles.  This suggests that on the road the 911Turbo will prove outstanding traction in the rain or snow, high agility on narrow country roads and perfect active safety even at high speeds.

The new 911 Turbo’s driving performance is duly tempered by its brake system, which comprises monobloc fixed-caliper disc brakes with 6 pistons at the front spindle and 4 at the rear.  The diameter of the internallyventilated and punctured brake discs at the front and rear wheels is 350 millimeters.  An optimized ceramic brake system that Porsche offers is Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake ( PCCB ).  This hi-tech system reduces with seventeen kilograms the standard brake system and provides anexcellent fading stability.

The major bodywork change of the 911 Turbo is the modified front end with its particular, tautly drawn cooling air inlets.  Combined with the standard oval bi-xenon headlights, it’ll outline the new unmistakable image.  From the rear perspective too, the Turbo will appear more powerful.  This is duefirst and foremost to its tail end, twenty-two millimeters wider than that of the previous model, to which the re-designed wing spoiler component has been aligned.

Secondly, the lateral air inlets behind the doors have been redrawn and now they offer a more efficient supply of cooling air to the charge-air intercoolers.

The basic price for the 911 Turbo is 115,000 euros.  In the States, from July eight, 2006, the automobile will be available at $122,000 ( excluding taxes ).

Porsche launches new line

Written by man on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Other.

The Porsche 356 is the first Porsche production auto and it was sold from 1948 through 1965.  Though many consider Porsche 64 as being the first automobile produced by the German company, the 64 wasn’t industrially produced and it was only a drivable test-mule.  The 364 was created by Ferdinand Porsche and his boy, Ferry Porsche, designed by Erwin Komenda and its engine features derived from the Volkswagen Beetle, deigned by Mr.  Porsche Senior.
The models available were initially coupe, cabriolet ( luxury convertible ) and then roadster ( a stripped down convertible ) .Before being withdrawn in 1965, it went through several changes.  The most desirable versions were 356′Carrera’ ( regularly sold for well over $150,000 ),’Super 90′ and’Speedster’.  In latter 50s, the original selling price for a Porsche was $4,000.

In 1954, Max Hoffman, the sole importer of Porsches into US required a lower cost, racier version for the Yankee marker.  , the company created 356′Speedster’ that became an instant hit thanks to the low, raked windscreen ( easily removable for weekend racing ), bucket seats, and minimal folding top.  Nowadays, this automobile is still really appreciated as it is sold for over $100,000 and it’s been used in several films, including 48 Hours, its follow up - Another 48 Hours and Top Gun.  In 1957, the production of Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars.  In 1959 it was replaced by the Convertible D model, which featured a taller, more practical windshield, glass side windows, and more comfy seats.

Year after year, the basic shape of Porsche 356 stayed the same and was easily recognized and remarked, although changes were made, especially in the mechanical area.  Coupe and cabriolet models were produced each year up to 1965, with the last 356B Roadster built in early 1963.  The final modelbuild was 356 C that featured disc brakes and the most powerful pushrod engine Porsche so far : the 95HP’SC’.

In the year that Porsche launched 911, 1964, Porsche 356 production topped at 14,151 vehicles.  Still, the company continued to sell the 356C in north America thru the end of 1965 as a lower-cost car.  When the patrons whinged the price for 911 was a little high ( just about twice the price of the 356 ), Porsche started producing the 912, using the 356 engine.  The 912model was sold between 1965 and 1969.

56 years after the start of the production, Sports Car international named 356C number 10 on the list of Top Sports automobiles of the 60s.  Today, the 356 is a respected auto among the collectors, as it stood the test of time.  Worldwide , thousands of 356 owners maintain the tradition, protecting their cars and driving them constantly.

Ways that you can find a good plumbing company

Written by man on Saturday, November 28th, 2009 in Other.

A lot of people really enjoy being able to fix things themselves.  They like to fix things around the house. But an area of your house that is very difficult to do yourself is the plumbing.Primarily because the plumbing is located in your floors.Or most of the plumbing is found within your walls.  So when there is a plumbing problem you need to call a plumber. So here are some steps you can take to locate a good plumber.

First of all a good method to locate a good plumber is with your family and friends. Like most things a referral is one of the best ways to find a business.  In my Temecula plumbing company that is one of the main ways I find clients.  A lot of the new customers are referrals from past customers.  Plus that is a good sign if another person is willing to recommend someone.  If they do recommend someone that is a good sign of good work.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is if the plumbing company has a license.  You will be surprised at how many unlicensed plumbers there are.  I am surprised at how little people ask for my license in my Murrieta plumbing business.A license lets you know a company has the skills necessary to do the job.  A license is a sign of a company willing to do what it takes to prove their ability.  It is a sign of laziness when a company doesn’t have a license.

The last thing you will want to do is locate the right kind of plumber. Some plumbing companies focus only on doing repairs. While you have some plumbers that do mainly new construction. If you have a repair that needs to be fixed you are sure to want a plumber who does repairs.  A person that concentrates on new construction might not be as skilled at fixing problems.

So if you use these steps to find a good plumber, you should be able to do just that. When you have something important that has to be done, the price will be worth it.
