An End And A New Beginning For Buell Motorcycles

On October 15, 2009, the Harley Davidson Corporation told the world that their Buell business of sport, adventure, and street cycles would no longer be sold. Harley desired to concentrate on their primary Harley Davidson brand. The closing Buell cycle was fabricated on October 30, making a total manufacturing run of 136,923 Buell bikes created over its 17 year relationship with Harley Davidson.

While not as big in terms of gross sales volume as the bikes of the Harley brand name, Buell’s bikes had a smaller but dedicated group of followers. Buell cycles were found by many owners to be not just fast fun bikes to ride or race, but also among the more original of American made bikes. They incorporated a proprietary original brake design that placed the brake discs on the outer edge of the wheel instead of by the hub for improved suspension, control, and corner tracking. Other Buell innovations involved using fuel-in-frame engineering, and using employing the swing arm as an oil resevoir. Buell power plants were also designed to be usage and rider friendly, getting upwards of 70 miles to the gallon, and being simple to maintain.

But the Buell motorbike isn’t totally extinct. A month after terminating his affiliation with Harley Davidson, Erik Buell proclaimed the founding of an independent race organization called Erik Buell Racing. Located in East Troy, Wisconsin, Erik Buell Racing will be staffed by an experienced team of Buell racing people. The goal of the embryonic shop is to support racing of the Buell 1125R. The young Buell Racing shop will be building race-use-only Buell 1125R cycles under permit from Harley Davidson, and supplying repair parts, services, and technical support to Buell cycle race riders. Erik Buell stated of the new venture: “Im looking forward to helping Buell racers keep their bikes flying. Weve got some exciting race development projects in the works and it will mean a lot to me personally to see Buell racers competing for wins and championships in the 2010 season and beyond.”
